Expanded Criminal Defense Lawyering

This review collects and critiques the academic literature on criminal defense lawyering, with an emphasis empirical work. Research attorneys in United States has traditionally emphasized scarcity of resources: too many people facing charges who are “too poor to pay” for counsel not enough funding pay constitutionally mandated lawyers. Scholars have focused capacity different delivery systems, such as public defender offices, change ultimate outcomes cases within their tight budgetary constraints. Over decades, however, theoretical understandings attorney's work expanded include client interests outside courtroom, reaching broader social conditions connected alleged act. Researchers responded by asking a range questions about effectiveness courtroom using improved data study lawyers at discrete procedural stages.
